This has features I wish my UDM Pro had!
I'm nowhere near an expert in networking, but what I can say is I have a UDM Pro for my main setup at home. This device has features that I wish my UDM pro had.VPN: So there is a VPN 'app' I guess built in to the device. That's awesome! What I didn't expect was how easy it was going to be to set up. I went to my VPN site on my computer, logged in, downloaded my config files for wireguard, put them on a usb, logged into my Slate AX ready to copy across the files and realised I didn't need to do any of that. The only thing I needed to do was log into the Slate, select VPN and client, log in, and select the servers I wanted to use! Wow.Next thing is adguard. It's built in, It works how you would expect it to. I usually run this on a docker at home, seperate to my router, so it's so good that its built in! It Also has a dashboard for adguard where you can configure more advanced settings like Upstream DNS and extra blocklists. You can limit individual clients speed. There is a toggle button on the side, that is configurable. e.g. You can set it to turn VPN on/off or Adguard on/off etc. There is a an applications page where you can download additional plugins. I haven't downloaded anything yet. But will eventually.Above are all things that I like.Things that I have noticed...It is pretty warm to touch, I looked in the dashboard and it runs at about 71°C with 1 client doing light internet/youtubing with the VPN, Adguard running and Tx set to max. There is a fan setting with it defaulting to come on at 75°C. So I assume it's fine to run at that temperaure for long periods of time. This is also in a non airconditioned room with ambient temperature at 30°C. Sooo I assume it will be much better when travelling and staying in 24/7 airconditioned rooms. The reason I bought this is so that I'd have an easy way to connect my devices (chromecast, laptop, phone and partners phone) to the same network, whilst remaining secure and private using hotel/accomodation wifi. It looks like it is going to do that job perfectly. You can't segregate local networks like you might want to on a home network, but who needs to do that whilst travelling.I believe this is worth the money and would buy it again.

This tiny unit is kickass. I have used it at home to create a separate network easily and quickly for the work computer. It was simple to set up and access the internet, then create the VPN connection using the built-in options and it has had no problems running another VPN over that. I could do that through my home router, but this was a discreet and straightforward solution that also provides a travel router. I have also travelled with it; being able to plug the phone in and have this router plugged into the wall then connecting via Wifi has freed the laptop from having the phone dangling out of it while also charging the phone. The VPN has run with no trouble when travelling. I have also been able to setup services from two different major VPN providers with ease, including using OpenVPN and Wireguard. I have tested the device using ethernet, tethering and Wifi connections. I have tested it with three mini-PCs simultaneously and that worked fine (after switching the WAN port to LAN). The device does what I want it to do, anything else will be a bonus.
------------------------------------
Update: GL.iNET does have responsive and effective customer support. My device worked perfectly for roughly a week before starting to consistently time-out when using the graphical interface, refusing to consistently connect to Wi-Fi, or tether, and it appeared to no longer reliably transmit Wifi. After ensuring the firmware was up to date, and trying out the Beta version that the company makes available, I contacted GL.iNET to tell them the issue and what fixes I had tried. The customer service person who responded was both helpful and effective. They quickly had a replacement unit shipped to me which has been working perfectly for a week now, and they asked me to ship the malfunctioning device directly to them so their technicians could examine it, I did this. They refunded the shipping cost as soon as I provided the receipt and tracking number. It is always disappointing when a device doesn’t work but given the quick and effective customer service, I would buy from this company again.

I should say I made the right decision in buying this little product after carefully analysing several competitor products online. Easy to set up and use, very reliable, very attractive interface, ability to put VPN, Adblock, personal DNS and many security features in this little handy device. You can take this anywhere, especially when using free Wifi in hotels or anywhere; use this as an extender. This will protect you from cyber-attacks and give you a reliable signal, a USB port, and 2 LAN ports for faster internet. Buy this product with confidence. One thing to add, though, is it gets heated up quickly. The fan will run when the temperature reaches 70 F or something. You need to lower it to 60 or less to get the fan kicked in at a lower temperature so the device doesn't get heated up quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only good for traveling, this little device is powerful and solid!
Reviewed in the United States on 10 April 2024

This is not only good for traveling, it's also amazing for providing a small local network. We have been using it for over a month now. It's so powerful, and the performance is solid. Overall, we are very happy with device and highly recommend it, especially for those who have a T-Mobile business cell phone plan, which usually offers an extra line for free. Since we have an extra line and extra cell phones, and T-Mobile offers 200GB premium HS data, this little device connects to our existing switch effortlessly. We were worried about the cell phone battery draining, but since we dedicate this cell phone line for our networking, the cell phone connects to this device all the time, so the phone battery has not been an issue at all. We are pleasantly surprised that this device delivers a steady T-Mobile 5G HS speed, and the WiFi signal reaches farther, which is much better than what we have with AT&T fiber internet. So we canceled our AT&T Fiber internet subscription. The only thing is the device is kind of hot while running, but we got this $13 super quiet fan from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G05A2MU?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details, which really cools it down :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Een wereld-apparaatje.
