Whether you're a hardcore gamer or a professional in need of a robust power supply, the EVGA SuperNOVA 1600 G2 80+ GOLD is a fantastic choice. 5.0 out of 5 stars 2017 Dell XPS 8920, and some general recommendations for buying a power supply
Reviewed in the United States on 6 October 2023
Style Name: GDSize: 700WVerified Purchase
Summary: My six year old Dell wouldn't turn on one day, so suspecting a power supply failure. I ended up selecting the EVGA brand based on Amazon and other website ratings/reviews.

Background: I did some troubleshooting on the power supply, opened it up looking for smoked components but didn't find any. I also did a deep clean on CPU cooler and fan, which was actually pretty dirty. After reassembling, found that the power supply and computer overall was more stable (no more odd won't turn on issues). I still decided to replace the power supply instead of waiting for it to fail, and be stuck w/o a computer.

Dell XPS 8920 specifics: One area where I ran into an issue was the ATX_CPU plug. The older Dell power supply D460AM-03 has a 4-pin connector, but the newer computers need more power, so that has been changed to a 8-pin. The 8pin, identified as 4+4 (e.g. the connector is split in half), and for 4-pin plug (older) motherboards, you only use one side. Be warned, that one is correct, and the other is incorrect. When you hold the connectors side by side, with the clips facing toward you, plug facing away from you, wires toward you), it's the LEFT side plug. The plugs have two different male inserts, one is completely square, and the other has two corners rounded off, which prevents the plugs from being inserted incorrectly. Take an extra minute to get a good look at the motherboard side, as extra assurance you have the right plug. Definitely do not force it in, because you'll damage the plug and/or the CPU side jack.

Observations: I spent quite a bit of time reading about different power supplies, as well as trying to understand the white / bronze / gold. I think it basically comes down to warranty. I selected the Gold based on a warehouse deal price. However, for a six year old computer, I don't think you need the five year, as other computers will likely fail before. One scenario to buy the better supply is if you build computers, and would just move it over to your next machine. Or if you want the extra assurance of a better made unit.

Power supply SIZE: The OEM Dell is 460W unit. I have a very basic GeForce GT730 card, and a PCI USB adapter card, and just one 3.5" HDD, and 2.5" SSD, so overall a very low power unit. Another way to "buy" some more reliability is to get a higher rated unit, so instead of the same 460W, the closest being 500W, I went with a 700W.

Pros: EVGA is a specialty manufacturer; great customer support; many different sizes and warranty levels to meet individual needs.

Cons: None.

Conclusion: At $85 for the 700W Gold (5-year), it's overkill for my application. Rating EVGA supplies 5-stars (warranty, ratings/reviews).

5.0 out of 5 stars A Reliable and Efficient Power Supply Unit
Reviewed in the United States on 22 June 2023

The EVGA SuperNOVA 220-G2-0650-Y1 is a high-quality power supply unit (PSU) that offers reliable performance and efficiency for both gaming and professional computing systems. This review will cover the key features of the PSU, including its build quality, power delivery, and overall value.

One of the standout features of the SuperNOVA 220-G2-0650-Y1 is its exceptional build quality. EVGA is known for producing reliable and durable components, and this PSU is no exception. The unit is constructed with high-quality materials, ensuring long-term stability and resistance to wear and tear. The fully modular design allows for easy cable management, reducing clutter and improving airflow within the computer case.

The power delivery of the SuperNOVA 220-G2-0650-Y1 is outstanding. With a 650-watt power rating, it provides ample power for mid-range to high-end gaming systems and professional workstations. The PSU boasts a high efficiency rating, typically above 90%, which ensures minimal energy waste and reduces heat generation. This not only leads to lower energy costs but also contributes to a cooler and quieter system operation.

The SuperNOVA 220-G2-0650-Y1 incorporates a variety of built-in safety features. It offers overvoltage protection (OVP), undervoltage protection (UVP), overcurrent protection (OCP), over-temperature protection (OTP), and short circuit protection (SCP). These protections safeguard your components from potential damage caused by power surges, fluctuations, or electrical faults, providing peace of mind during operation.

The PSU operates quietly, thanks to its optimized fan design. The 140mm double ball bearing fan provides efficient cooling while maintaining a low noise level. Under typical loads, the fan operates silently, ensuring a quiet computing experience. The fan also features a semi-passive mode, which allows it to stop spinning during low power usage, further reducing noise levels.

In terms of value, the SuperNOVA 220-G2-0650-Y1 offers a compelling package. It provides a reliable and efficient power supply solution at a competitive price point. While there may be cheaper PSUs available on the market, the EVGA brand reputation, along with the unit's high-quality components and performance, make it a worthwhile investment for users seeking a reliable and durable power supply.

One consideration to note is the physical size of the PSU. The SuperNOVA 220-G2-0650-Y1 is a standard ATX form factor, so it may not fit in smaller computer cases or compact builds. It's important to ensure that your computer case has sufficient space to accommodate the PSU's dimensions before making a purchase.

Cables are much too short to fit inside a Mid Tower Corsair 4000 AirFlow case. The cable supplied with the PSU to the Motherboard is under 1' length and not even close to reach the Pro B660 M-A Motherboard which is as expected inside the case near the top. See picture attached.
