Product description
On February 17, 2013, Soundgarden concluded a sold-out U.S. Winter tour in support of King Animal, their first studio album in over sixteen years, with a special Live from the Artists Den taping at the Wiltern in Los Angeles. Soundgarden mixed new songs with classic radio hits and rarities performed live for the first time, in front of a rapturous crowd. The concert has become the most requested Soundgarden show to be released of all-time. The 29 song, nearly two-and-a-half-hour show encompasses the band’s entire legacy of songs, from their early years with “Hunted Down” through their monumental albumsBadmotorfinger and Superunknown respectively with “Outshined” and “Black Hole Sun,” and nearly every song from King Animal including “By Crooked Steps” and “Been Away Too Long.”The 4LP 180-gram audiophile black vinyl concert albumfeatures 17 songs thathave never been released on a livealbum, including “Blind Dogs” which is the first-time the band ever performed the song live.
Packaging features a slipcase that holds four individual jackets which link together to form one large image and a two-panel insert.

But Chris came to most of us who were part of his generation as the lead singer of Soundgarden. We would raise our eyes in awe hearing "Seasons" when the Singles OST came out, wow...this guy is way more than just a rock vocalist. And over the next 25+ years since the Seattle scene exploded, he would thrill us again and again with his stunning voice whether it was acoustic covers, his acoustic tour, the gentler side of Soundgarden we would see in Down on the Upside tracks, Audioslave's three studio albums, the Soundgarden reunion and fabulous reunion studio album King Animal, until we mourned his untimely passing.
But one tour for me, having seen Soundgarden several times between 1994 and 2014, stood out - the 2013 North American tour. I know, they call it the last night of the US tour, but they played Canada too folks, it was a North American tour. And I saw one of those two Toronto shows, the 01.26.13 show, 27 songs or so, around 2.5 hours...and the BEST I'd ever heard the band sound. So tight, so perfect and Chris' voice so damned on you stood there jaw agape until someone's Doc Marten cracked you on the back of the head from someone crowd surfing haha.
I waited 5 hours, 3 in freezing cold blizzard weather outside and 2 at the front of the stage, to get to that show and was railed directly in front of Chris' mic. It's one of the most memorable live shows I've ever seen. My first experience of Soundgarden in 1994 was pretty "meh", it was the only time ever Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails would share the stage together until they toured in 2014, and NIN that day (August 6th,1994, Molson Park, support from You Am I, Marilyn Manson, Rev. Horton Heat and the amazing Pop Will Eat Itself) blew SG away. Two years later in 1996 on the Lollapallooza stage they rocked much harder and touring several DOTU songs had it much more together. The reunion tour was great too, as was the NIN/SG tour, but that 2013 small club tour was on another level.
I knew they taped professionally the last show of the three nights at the Wiltern, since then I've probably sent 10 e-mails spaced out occasionally saying, "guys, any chance that Soundgarden show you taped MIGHT see Blu-ray release at some point"? And after Chris' passing, it seemed more imperative they release this document of Soundgarden's finest tour.
So when it was finally announced this year, I just about peed my gitch. Hooray! And this morning at 8am the good postman knocked at my door and brought me the Blu-ray. 1080p24 high bit-rate AVC/MPEG-4 video and lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio (or stereo PCM option also) - this is the real deal. Great looking picture, stunning 5.1 mix. Also the stereo mix is totally dynamic, no loudness wars mastering here. This truly is a well done Blu-ray deserving of the occasion.
Why is the BLu-ray the best option? Well, with the vinyl you get the same digital master but it's gone through the extra step of cutting it for vinyl, plus it's over 8 sides which means listening start to finish you've flipped records 7 times, that's 7 breaks in the flow of the show. With the CDs you've gone from the 24/48 master to a 16/44.1 CD master and the show is split into two halves, you're flipping discs at the half way point (not literally flipping, but changing)
With the Blu-ray, if you just want to listen, you can turn your TV off and play the show and hear it as it was that night, with no interruptions from start to finish, listening directly to the original master in its original bit depth and sampling rate. No additional conversions, no side gaps, just rock and roll, all for 1/4 of the cost of the vinyl and seems to be listing cheaper than the CD too. Perfect! Like you got the studio master for cheaper than the two inferior formats, and I'm not anti-CD or anti-vinyl but when you get the source material it seems that's the way to go. Give me an all analogue-cut vinyl of an album that was recorded and mixed all to tape like The Beatles in Mono sets? Sure, I'll buy the vinyl in a heartbeat.
We finally have a definitive live document of Soundgarden and it's well worth being in your collection. Buy without reservations.
I'll welcome any and all Soundgarden live releases they manage to source from the vaults, but it's nice to finally have such a great performance for home video with a glorious surround track. This one is going to get lots of replay value.
The one pic of CC i've uploaded is during "Taree" from the 01.26.13 Toronto show...yeah, I was that close...all night...just as I'll be tonight in my Home Theater when I crank this Blu-ray. Peace! Thanks Chris for all the amazing music.
