About this item

  • 【𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐥-𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫】New generation 50mm large metal-ceramic composite diaphragm: ultra-light and tough with exceptional tension and oxidation resistance, all of which contribute to the commendable naturalness and accuracy of Athena, since thinner and harder diaphragm offer a larger linear dynamic range with less distortion while still preventing cone breakup. From signal to vibration to the lovely melody you enjoy, Athena is skillful in this conversion with utmost efficiency, all thanks to the ultra-fine voice coil and flux magnetic driver system.
  • 【𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐉𝐨𝐲】Upgraded with an M-shaped side venting system rather than the traditional front and rear vents, to improve airflow and release the air trapped in the headphone. With better airflow, the Athena will give you a purer and cleaner sound that’s more natural and enjoyable.
  • 【𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐲】Just like its name, Athena has brilliant capability and appearance. Besides the impressive high-resolution audio it presents, Athena’s texture and design are also a sight to behold. The ingenious introduction of glass adds the richness of texture and transformed the Athena into not just a competent HiFi headphone, but also a sophisticated decoration piece.
  • 【𝐄𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐝𝐬 - 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐇𝐢𝐅𝐢】The innovative and ergonomically designed ear pads are crafted of high quality Suede Fabric, an ultra-lightweight and ultra-comfortable material that makes for a comfortable wear. Its geometric inner membrane design ensures a perfect seal for those tight basslines, while permitting airflow so your ears don’t get too stuffy.
  • 【𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐔𝐩𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞】Great effort is made on making the cable to improve the full range response and give you a joy of noise-free and pure listening. The custom coaxial OCC cable has 33*0.08mm + 38*0.06mm structure, the purity and greater conductivity of which offer excellent transient response and massively improve the acoustic quality. The insulation layer will keep you safe from electric shortcut and the protective outer wrapping is nice to the touch and prevent noises from microphonics- the echo of the cable rubbing against any surface.

Been using HD-650's for over 13 years now, figured it was time to upgrade. saw Z reviews talking about these headphones, had good things to say, so i figured for $250 AUD, cant really go wrong.
Tuns out, these headphone are actually amazing gems, like wow, same if not better level of comfort as the HD-650, much tighter bass, crystal clear high ends, and a wide soundstage on the same level.
in a blind test, id say these headphone cost over $800, so your getting a great bang for buck, lets hope the build quality holds up, so far so good.

They are awesome. A bit dark maybe, perfect tuning for me! I'm a sound engineer and I've been rocking many headphone in my career. DT770-990-1990-700 ProX, K702, HD 600-6xx, CD900ST, etc. They are all great for design and mixing. I still use them all as references but the ones I enjoy the most and that I drive daily are my Athenas.

5.0 out of 5 stars So you want a warm sounding can...

If you're an Audiophile, these cans will hit you in a particular way. As someone who aspires to k702 soundstaging and detail, it came up short of those aspirations. That's Not why I bought it. They do not have a massive soundstage, they do not extract every little nuance, but they do have envelopment and engagement. I've been using them for gaming recently since...

* it can be driven from my controller quite sufficiently (this coming from an amp snob)
* audio cues and imaging are sufficient
* it is comfortable to wear and listen to for extended time
* it suppresses outside noise just a little bit
* and the bass rocks hard - controlled, without 'boominess'

Perhaps most importantly, these are the most fatigue free headphones I've ever tried. The Athena is a delight, warm and chill. I could listen to it all day without hurting my ears (as opposed to my lovely beyerdynamics that take less than 20 minutes and probably the reason for my tinnitus).

Will I be enjoying music with these...yes. When I want a more intimate presentation, I find they present a full bodied sound that is pretty natural and doesn't stab your ears. I don't feel they will play well at extreme volumes, and while they are detailed they will not let you hear a fly fart like some other cans do. But, because the timbre is so nice on the Athena I do hear 'more' of the music sometimes than brighter cans I've been using. Some have compared it to the Sennheiser 6xx line, and I guess I can see that, but it's not as revealing.

So, in summary it's a great budget can that's easy to drive, comfortable for your head and eardrums, sounds really really good for the price, and gives a presentation that is natural, warm, and slightly forgiving to bad sources while also singing with good ones. Highly recommended at retail price, but if you get them on sale like I did, don't hesitate!

P.S. one irritant about not knowing which was left from right side. I applied stickers on the fingerprint magnet of a casing :-O and problem was solved. I'm a pragmatist. Nice cable BTW, short though at around 5 feet

5.0 out of 5 stars They give a different perspective on my music

I bought these headphones because I wanted a pair that were easier to drive than those which I already have, the 'prime day' discount tempted me into pushing the buy button on this particular model. The HarmonicDyne Athena does work better with USB-powered dongle adaptors than most of my other circumaural headphones, but the sound didn't become really good until I tried them with the battery-powered Topping G5 DAC/amp, or better still, my Gustard H16 amplifier (mains power).

The semi-closed construction is unusual, I wasn't sure what to expect. In terms of isolation the Athena behaves like an open-back headphone. What the solid back plate brings to the party seems to be reinforcement of the bass. Presumably, the vents on the side walls of the cups alleviate some of the resonance issues that impair the performance of closed-back headphones.

HarmonicDyne market the Athena as a studio headphone, but it does not sound anything like professional headphones from Sennheiser, beyerdynamic or AKG. The bass is obviously boosted and the midrange is recessed. With some familiar music I first tried on the Athena I had trouble setting the volume, when I turned up the loudness to give vocals the presence I expect, the bass was too much. I have seen frequency response measurements which show that the treble is elevated, however I don't find the sound too bright for me. There is a pleasant sparkle to the upper frequencies, but no harshness, and less 'air' than I'm used to with studio style headphones.

I was disappointed with these initially, because they are not the dongle-friendly studio style headphones I was expecting. Once I got over my preconceptions, and started to embrace them for what they are, I began to really enjoy them.

The sound is warm in tonal balance, and I found that I don't have to play then so loud to enjoy the music. The stereo image is pretty wide, and with music which plays tricks with stereo effects, sounds are steered around with precision. Once I became acclimatised to the frequency balance, I could appreciate that the resolution is excellent for the price, clearly more finely detailed than the beyerdynamic DT 770 (although not as focused as the more expensive DT 1990). With a lot of commercial music the vocals are given a dominant position in the mix, I like how the Athena hangs the singer further back in the soundstage. The sound reminds me of my speaker system more than most headphones because it feels less intense and analytical.

Comfort will vary from person to person, for me it was okay but could be better. The clamp force is very low, meaning that all the pressure is right on top of your head, I would much prefer a more even distribution. I have a large head, yet I have to use the second tightest headband setting to stop the headphone slipping around every time I move. When I took the Athena to bed with me, my pillow pushed the headphone almost right off my head. If you have a small head these HarmonicDynes may not fit well at all.

I like the plain black styling and the build quality feels reasonably good, but I do have some gripes. The left and right markings are not visible in low light, there is no braille 'L' or other indication. The shiny parts really show up fingerprints, and they are located right were you will be always touching them.

HarmonicDyne have provided a pretty fancy box which unfortunately is unsuitable for daily storage, due to the awkward way it opens and that you have to remove the cable to put the Athena inside, I wish they had provided a useful box like Sennheiser did with the HD 650.

The cable looks expensive, and HarmonicDyne claim it eliminates microphonics, but actually it is quite raspy above the splitter.

The pads are of a common size and mounting arrangement, it should be easy to use third party replacements, although I have not tried to do so yet.

Buon ascolto a tutti.
