Not a Brand New Unit
It's a disk. A Hard Disk. It has a finite life, and is susceptible to damage and failure, so when I buy a NEW UNIT off of Amazon, I kind of expect it to be new.I have had the disk installed and powered on for a few days, and ran the above test to check the SMART results.270 Power on Hours, and 3650 Spin-Up Hours. Perhaps 80 Power on Hours are from my usage.This seller has sold a used unit as new. Be aware.

I have versions of wd reds in my NAS for over 5 years and have not had a problem with them and they are still running as they should. So when it came to increasing disk storage requirements I was happy to stick with WD reds. My only gripe to giving one less star is that Amazon packaged this in a box with with no internal padding like bubble wrap or packing paper, so the hard drive bounces around inside the Amazon box. Furthermore, I was shocked when I witnessed the Amazon flex delivery person underarm throw the parcel onto my front porch. Obviously he didn't know that the contents were fragile.

I managed to grab these when they were on special. Good value for the amount of HDD space.

Unfortunately this hard drive would not work in my up-to-date computer even though it claims to be compatible. It wreaked havoc on my operating system (Windows 11 Pro) and prevented many things from working. I have returned the drive for a refund as it is useless. (I have not received recompense / refund yet)

All in good order.
The drive was still factory sealed & showed no mishandling.
Disk Surface test for bad sectors: none found.
Read and write speed test: all up to spec.

I already bought a the same disk 3 years ago and it still going strong, performance is rock solid, so I wanted to go with the same disk again. The disk was tested fully in single mode and raid configuration and it meets my expectation fully

Pro:
- CMR disk so its suitable for NAS
- Reliable for long time usage
- Sequential write performance between 200-83MB/s depending on the region being written (The farther away from the inside of the disk platters you go, the higher the velocity of the head thus resulting in faster speed)

Con:
- tends to get hot so need proper ventilation
- 5700 rpm compared to the red prod wich is 7200
- warranty is only 3 years for the red pro compared to 5 years for the Red pro

As a power user running a home NAS system, I need both speed and reliability from my hard drives. After putting this 8TB WD Red Plus model to the test, I'm thoroughly impressed on both fronts!

Using `hdparm` to benchmark, I recorded read speeds exceeding 185 MB/sec when connected directly via SATA. That's faster than Western Digital's claimed speed and almost double what I get from older drives. Transfers and backups take half the time!

++++
hdparm -t --direct /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 558 MB in 3.01 seconds = 185.50 MB/sec
++++

In addition to the great performance, this drive runs cool and quiet in my NAS enclosure thanks to the 5400RPM rotational speed. And it's designed for 24/7 operation, giving me confidence in its longevity and reliability under constant use.

With 8TB capacity, I've got plenty of headroom for backups, media storage, and archiving important files while still leaving space to grow. And the CMR technology means maximum compatibility with my NAS RAID.

For home and small office NAS setups that demand a perfect blend of high capacity, sustained performance, cool operation and proven reliability, the WD Red Plus line is a winner.
This drive meets my needs perfectly!
