It's a hard drive. It holds information. In this case, close to 8Tb of information (less considering you have to format it). It's a CMR drive, so it's a decent speed. I added this to my server, and so far no complaints.

It's been added to a pool drive, so I haven't noticed specifically anything outstanding or poor about the server since this has been added. It works fine, and hopefully will continue to work for a while to come.

It did come very well packaged, with the drive suspended inside a wrap around cardboard case. The packaging was one of the best I've seen and certainly protected the drive during transport.

I bought a NAS. Didn't know much about how it works except I wanted network attached storage. I wanted good quality, reliable disks but also not spending a fortune. Disks seem to be a commodity item now but there are differences in performance. I wanted 2x disks so one would be copy of the other.

Based on all above criteria I bought these and they work well. All I did was install them into the NAS device and they "just work". I've had no disk failures and they seem to work well. If something is "set & forget" that suits me just fine.

This is fundamentally a great unit but the noise of it in operation was annoying. I tried dampening the noise (the NAS is housed in a cupboard) but eventually gave up and replaced this with a SSD.

What blew me away with this was I was able to transfer 4 different SD cards (Video footage) at the same time and it took them all at close to 90mbps each... which was the max of my SD cards.

My other drives all would have slowed down but for some reason these seem to keep up?! Maybe being a 12TB is has a few read/write arms... I have no friggin idea how they work but its damn good.

I paid $330 each, shop around.

Over the years, I have bought many WD and Seagate drives. This is the highest proportion of disks that have failed in my Synology NAS. My WD lasted 2-4 years. They arrived well-packed and in excellent boxes. Sadly my NAS failed, and it took time to get a new one by then, I was past my automatic return date. Now I have a hassle. I don't know if it is a delivery from the USA problem or if the disks were faulty.

I rarely write a review but decided to. First, I am old, like dirt. Retired as a system, network, cyber engineer a long, long time ago. How old? I started with Assembly language and the OSI model. LOL.
I still enjoy playing with computer stuff though.

I don't use these drives in a NAS but do use the IronWolf drives for my media server (recently rebuilt on a mini pc) from the old tower which I keep as a backup. I really like these drives. They can run 24x7 or on/off, depending on the system. I use them as my backup media across my desktops, laptops and servers via 6e wifi and also direct attached. They hang off external USB to SCSI enclosures and run like a charm.

Well, so much for the background. The first three I bought in 2021. The next in 2022, another in 2023 as a replacement and now an IronWolf Pro just ordered as another replacement (7200RPM!) a few minutes ago.

Real world experience is simply this. As of today, the last one bought in 2021 is showing signs of file corruption. Nothing major, but definitely getting some bad blocks. I scanned the drive and repaired it, but in my world, it is either perfect or replaced. Sure, they could probably go for another year, but I don't want the hassle. And for a few extra details. The drives did all not get the same usage. Some have one year, other three years. The one-year usage ones are running great, the three-year ones are showing errors.

My conclusion? The IronWolf drives are great for the money. Whether in an on/off environment or 24x7, they give a solid three years of great performance and reliability.

I decided to buy the IronWolf Pro 4TB running at 7200RPM for a little extra spin for those Ultra 4K movies. It was only 20 dollars more.

They get my vote, just plan a three-year endurance unless you are running a NAS. Then it is not that big a deal. Enjoy!

PS: I was going to buy SSD's, but with the crazy price increases since the first of the year, I'll stick with HDD's. They work great for my purposes.

This device has been around the world and toted into jungle and desert environments. Though designed to be hidden and forgotten in an office crevice, it has proved to be a reliable data partner even when on the move into hostile environments. It does not like high humidity but other than that, it operates in extreme temperatures and questionable power sources.
It was not designed for this kind of use and I do not recommend it for such, but my opinion is that if it could survive this kind of abuse, it will do well now I have it back in service in my office.
Gamers, go SSD. The slower speeds of this unit would likely throw you off your game.
