Alcuni motivi per i quali ho iniziato a postare i miei “pareri” il 1° dicembre 2010 qui su Amazon sono stati la lettura del libro di Maurizio Blatto e di quello di Michael Azerrad. I libri che mi hanno esaltato e “gasato” sono stati “L’ultimo disco dei Mohicani” e “American Indie”, la lettura era “condita” da un massiccio ascolto di Candy Apple Grey degli Hüsker Dü e di altri gruppi punk e dalla maniacale analisi della rivista “Rumore” Così mi sono messo in testa (illuso) che pure io avrei potuto dire la mia (pensiero arrogante). All’inizio chiamarle recensioni mi sembrava davvero troppo superbo, e poi rileggendole oggi, sembrano davvero scritte da un analfabeta. Con il tempo ho “abbassato la cresta”, non mi posso considerare un critico musicale o letterario, ovvio, anche se continuo a leggere e ad ascoltare e a studiare i critici musicali “veri”. Mi limito, dunque, al ruolo di “consumatore” di cultura (album, libri, ecc) e continuo, sporadicamente, a scrivere i miei pareri. Con il tempo penso di essere migliorato solo nell’approccio grammaticale. In questo periodo sto leggendo “Post Punk 1978-1984” scritto da un grande critico musicale, quel Simon Reynolds firma del giornalismo musicale di un certo spessore. Libro molto bello, che naturalmente leggo mentre ascolto gli album e le band di cui scrive (finalmente posso affermare che ho tutta la musica di cui ho bisogno per godere appieno della lettura). Così colgo l’occasione per scrivere i miei pensieri su quest’album dei Gang Of Four (che ricordo di aver comprato nei primi mesi del 2011 quando Amazon era agli inizi e i prezzi erano davvero molto bassi). C’è una definizione che Reynolds raccoglie da uno dei membri dei Gang of Four, e cioè :<che I Gang of Four erano dei Clash ma senza i vestiti da cowboy>, per questo motivo hanno sfondato negli U.S.A. esattamente come i più famosi Clash. Ed è per questo che il loro hard-funk è stato esempio da seguire per una miriade di band americane (che citerò dopo). L’album in questione è puro post-punk intelligente, privo di machismo ed esente da piagnistei new-romantic. La musica asciutta, con una batteria che non riverbera, un basso essenziale, i piatti che non “sferragliano”, i testi impegnati, la chitarra funzionale al sound, rendono quest’album direi quasi “algido”, freddo, quasi spigoloso all’ascolto. Per quanto riguarda i testi preferisco rimandare all’analisi fatta da Reynolds e Greil Marcus nei loro libri o nelle loro recensioni. Album davvero notevole, per gli amanti, e ora parte la sfilza di band più o meno ispirate dai Gang of Four come anticipato prima: Red Hot Chili Peppers, B-52’s, Minutemen, Fugazi, Big Black (quest’ultime tre sono tra le mie preferite). Continuo ancora con i “più recenti”: Rage Against the Machine, Helmet, Rapture. Dell’elenco non fanno parte i Talking Heads, ma solo perché contemporanei, anche se un attimo anticipatori rispetto ai Gang of Four. Queste sono le coordinate musicali, credo siano sufficienti per consigliarne l’ascolto, dunque, Buoni Ascolti!
