Product description

The Tardis brings the Doctor, Polly and Ben to a colony on the swamp planet of Vulcan. Soon after arriving, the Doctor witnesses a brutal murder. Meanwhile, in another part of the colony, an ancient crashed space capsule has been discovered in the swamps. The colony's misguided chief scientist opens the capsule and discovers a group of strange metal 'creatures' inside. 'Power of the Daleks' was the first Doctor Who story to star Patrick Troughton as the Doctor. Sadly, none of the six original broadcast episodes any longer exist in the BBC Film Archives. However, compete audio recordings of the lost episodes have survived and it is these audio recordings that are used as the basis for this special animated production of the programme. Now is a brand new edition and brought to you in glorious black and white.

For whovian tragics like me, it is line-ball as to whether this is worth the upgrade from the original DVD release. Having said that, and with the studio having more time, the results are quite good. For a start, they have not been slavish in following the camera angles or the costuming (especially poor Pat's tartan pants) and the animation is all the better for it. The regeneration scene, especially, has been changed substantially. If you have the original, you will not notice much difference, except in that first episode, also when Lesterton finds out that the Daleks are self-replicating, and bits of the last episode. The animation is definitely stepped up, with no having to worry about Troughton's tartan, and it is much smoother. You have the telesnap reconstruction as well to make comparisons. I don't believe there is anything new in this particular set, except for what is noted, and the fact that you have 3 Blu ray discs, not 2 DVDs and 2 Blu-rays. There is definitely one gem in the new set: a very rare surviving episode of Patrick Troughton's first TV series, Robin Hood. It has been somewhat cleaned up, but it really is for hard-core historians, since it is incomplete, with only a few brief scenes of Troughton as Robin Hood.

Long story short, if you haven't got this, get it; if you have, it is up to you whether it is worth the upgrade.

The animation is much improved upon the original though it is still janky in a few places. The lack of a colour option might disappoint some people.
