Product description

Just two months after the release of his seminal album After The Gold Rush, Neil Young played a solo show at The Shakespeare Theater, Stratford, CT on January 22 1971. The show was filmed and recorded, and the concert shown on German TV later in 1971. In 2020, while Neil and his team were reviewing his Archive for future projects, Neil re-visited the 16mm film and audio recording of this show that had been preserved in the Archive for almost 50 years. Piecing together the tapes and footage, Neil realized that he had the full concert – the film of which is the earliest live footage of Neil performing that is known to exist. Neil has written on NYA that this show is “superior to our beloved “Massey Hall". A more calm performance, without the celebratory atmosphere of Massey Hall, captured live on 16mm. Young Shakespeare is a very special event. To my fans, I say this is the best ever." As an insight into Neil's prolific song writing at the time, the concert features two songs from the recently released After The Gold Rush but four songs from the classic Harvest album that was still over a year away from being released. The wonderful set list also includes acoustic renditions of favorites such as “Ohio", “Cowgirl In the Sand", “Helpless", “Down By The River" and “Sugar Mountain". The ancient analog tapes have been lovingly restored – resulting in (as Neil says on NYA) “one of the most pure sounding acoustic performances we have in the Archive". Young Shakespeare is being released almost exactly 50 years after the performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing & surprisingly more enjoyable than what I thought a solo acoustic gig would be!!

Originally I bought just the CD on its own, considering that it was only a solo acoustic show from 1971, that I did not need the vinyl or the film...what else would it be?? I did buy the CD cuz I collect Neil Young and want every title from his catalogue & archives...but the price on the box was a bit high for just a solo gig...BUT when I ordered both the recent ORS4 CD box and the upcoming "Toast" unreleased album from 2001, I saw a serious pricedrop on this box of "Young Shakespeare" to around $35!! Then I jumped at it because you can't beat it and I could always sell or trade the original just-the-CD and not lose much...but wow, with this box, everything to gain!! It's a solid sturdy box with a silklike surface (be aware of fingerprints though), nice gatefold vinyl with inner polylined sleeve, the CD & the DVD...all have identical photos & artwork, simple & tasteful...with inner slips of NY telling of his archive, website, newspaper & reasonable subscription price...not overkill...I watched the DVD and it's a lot more enjoyable than I expected, neat how it starts with the vinyl of the concert spinning on a turntable, and occasional photos and videos appearing throughout...not just Neil playing & clearly enjoying himself...his commentary is both fun and insightful, doesn't feel dated in the least, despite the clear age of the visuals, but it's as good as it will get...the concert feels timeless, could have been recorded yesterday, not just 1971!! My only quibble is the end of the concert, it fades out in the middle of "Sugar Mountain"...I guess the filmmaker didn't get the whole song, but happy the audio did...otherwise perfect...I will happily buy each of these NY archives boxsets without question, except I did not buy the expensive "After The Gold Rush" one because the CD was not included with the silver-sleeved vinyl & 7"...if it WAS, I would have...I did buy the "Barn" box and deluxe "Way Down In The Rust Bucket" cuz of the included CDs & DVD, not just the 4LP one...the next one will be "Return To Greendale"...keep em coming!!

This box set is fantastic, I perticully love Sugar Mountain. The interaction with the audience is brilliant and makes me laugh every time I hear it. Fantastic Neil, your the best. I have got most of his albums on vinyl and this is a good addition to my collection. Long may you keep writing this brilliant music. I'm 66 now and have followed and listened to your music since the 70s. My favourite Artist of all time. Thanks Neil.
