More Flexibility, More Freedom

WD Gold lets you build out your storage your way with a full portfolio of SATA HDDs from 1TB to 22TB(1), engineered for heavy application workloads and designed to handle workloads up to 550TB(3) per year.

Enhanced Reliability

With up to 2.5M hours MTBF(2), WD Gold hard drives deliver enhanced levels of dependability and durability.

Vibration Protection

WD Gold drives have sophisticated monitoring electronics that help correct linear and rotational vibrations in real time using enhanced vibration protection technology for improved performance in high-vibration environments.

Plays Well with Others

Specifically designed for use in enterprise-grade storage systems and data centers, WD Gold HDDs are broadly compatible with major enterprise operating systems.

Scale Your Business

WD Gold drives are available in capacities up to 22TB(1) utilizing the OptiNAND technology's capacity-enabling feature in 20TB and 22TB.

(1) 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.

(2) MTBF: Projected values for model number WD221KRYZ, WD202KRYZ. Final MTBF and AFR specifications will be based on a sample population and are estimated by statistical measurements and acceleration algorithms under typical operating conditions, typical workload and 40°C device-reported temperature. Derating of MTBF and AFR will occur above these parameters, up to 550TB/year and 60°C (device reported temperature).

(3) Workload Rate is defined as the amount of user data transferred to or from the hard drive. Workload Rate is annualized (TB transferred X (8760 / recorded power-on hours)). Workload Rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super fast and quiet for enterprise level HDD; "Clicking sound"

I'm a photographer and while I require a lot of storage space, I was also looking for speed - not SSD level but fast enough so that when I move my photos from my SD card or edit photos in Lightroom and scroll through hundreds and thousands of photos, they load at a more reasonable speed. With that, I originaly was going to go with an 8TB 2.5" SSD for around $650. But I struggled with spending that much and "only" getting 8TB considering I'd use that up in less than 2 years. So my other option was going with an old style spinners (HDDs) and search for the following: speed and reliability and it narrowed down to the WD Gold HDDs. I originally purchased a single drive but when I realized how fast and quiet it was, I purchased a second drive and decided to run them in a RAID 0 environment, and wow is it fast! While the single drive was pushing the read/write to around 250mbs, under RAID 0 with the two drives combined into a single volume, I am now getting slightly MORE than double the read/write speeds.

Note: For anyone deciding on RAID 0 - keep in mind that if a single drive within your RAID 0 fail, both disks will fail since the data is distributed evenly across the multiple drives. With that said, have a proper backup system in place. For example, my setup is this: WD Gold RAID 0 as my primary, a separate desktop hard drive that backs up the primary, and then a cloud-based backup that backs up the back up of the primary.

Update: There are a few folks that are complaining about a "clicking sound" that is heard about every 5 to 6 seconds. Please note that there is nothing wrong with the drives. This clicking sound is the result of a feature called “Preventive Wear Leveling” or "PWL". It’s a periodic head sweep to distribute lubricant and prevent wear in a particular place if lubricant were to build up in one spot. Keep in mind these are enterprise-level hard drives which mean they are supposed to last very very long. With that, there are some quirks like this PWL feature that are supposed to enhance reliability. Reliability is certainly a priority and I really do not want to purchase replacements in years to come so hearing a clicking sound every few seconds is not a big deal to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down one of the best hard drives that exists.
Reviewed in Canada on 8 January 2022
Capacity: 18TBStyle Name: Hard DriveVerified Purchase
I ordered 4 of these from amazone warehouse as open box items, 3 of them showed up defective being that they were 275-300$ off regular price i didnt want to return them to amazon. I contacted WD and they said they would RMA them just put in a request, it said it would be 25$ for instant replacment mailed to me and i figured anthor 50$ for shipping. I contacted amazon to see if they would reimburse me the cost of what i expected to be 75$ in total.

Surprisingly they wouldnt budge on the issue and would only let me return the items. Since 75$ is alot less than 275 x3 + tax i went through with the rma to WD who gave me a prepaid shipping label and waived the 25$ replacment fee because of what i had gone through. (they always do the prepaid shipping label for my contry but the 25$ is for the advanced rma so they ship replacment immediatly instead of waiting until they recieve the defective items.) I have half a dozen of these gold's 20 Red Pro's and a dozen Purple Pro's all though they are all amazing the purples are the best 18tb drives that exist atm with these golds very close behind.
