Solid, reliable, no drift in over ten years - long lasting gamepad.
4 Stars
Solid, reliable, no drift in over ten years - long lasting gamepad.
Caveat first - the F710 I have was purchased well over 10 years ago - probably closer to 12 or 13 - and as such is a different model number on the back: 840-000062. It looks exactly the same as those being sold now, and it appears there's been absolutely no changes to the software for this gamepad in almost as long. My only concern is that perhaps components being used today are different or of lower quality than those used in the "olden days" when I purchased, so keep that in mind. This has been used regularly as the only non-mouse controller in my collection until I bought a flight stick for Flight Simulator 2020 last year. It's excellent for driving games - I still bash around in Burnout, various Need for Speeds, space combat games, space trading, and even the odd FPS (yes, I'm a heathen at times) - it handles them all. Here's the good - and there's a lot:Firstly, no drift from either thumb-stick at all in all that time. The sticks centre and track as well as they did when I bought the controller. Trying to use an Xbox 360 wired/wireless or a Xbox 1 controller always shows some jitter in the control panel for the sticks. I'm sure the games compensate, but that really bugs me. There is no jitter with the old F710, even after all this time. Stable, centred, and drift-free. Buttons all still work, triggers are still springy, and it feels grippy and good to hold.Vibration is quite good - and easily turned on or off with the button on the controller. It uses regular old AA batteries, which I prefer - I always have rechargeable batteries on hand, and they seem to last for ages in this controller. There's a switch on the back to switch from X-input to D-input - essentially X, it seems, reports the controller as a standard xbox 360 controller. I've had no problems with this from windows 7 to 8 to 10, and now onto beta 11. Works straight up, no fuss. D-input is probably less useful - it turns the controller into a "Rumblepad" which, I read, is for older games. I don't think I've had to use it for anything directly as all the games I use a gamepad on work fine in xbox controller mode - but useful in that it turns the two triggers into standard buttons, in case you have need for an additional two buttons rather than two triggers. Neat. D-input is also needed for using the official Logitech control panel software - which leads us onto the bad...C'mon, Logitech - this controller isn't detected in the latest G-Hub software which is _supposed_ to be the central hub for all things Logitech Gaming. Instead, the gamepad's Logitech Gaming Software control panel is over ten years old - and no updates in that time! Honestly, if you really need to assign macros per game, etc., and they aren't supported by in-game settings, then you probably need a more "pro" controller than this. Is it really that hard to update the software, or have it detected by the newer control panel, though? There's "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - fine, the controller works - but there's also "totally lazy" - the software control panel is a very lazy effort now. Cool ten years ago, but now - not so much. There are sometimes issues with connection on start-up, as in the controller won't connect to the dongle. Easily checked in Windows 10 or 11 by pressing any button - if the single green LED on the controller flashes constantly then it means it just won't connect. Logitech have made a half-hearted attempt at a utility to fix this, but it is actually more complicated than the fix which works for me - unplug the dongle, wait a couple of seconds, then plug it back in - all fine. The layout is in the PlayStation way with both thumb-sticks at the bottom, rather than asymmetrical like an xbox controller. A minor annoyance, but I do like the xbox layout. And finally - there's no "off" switch. It seems to go into a power saving mode (probably why it doesn't reconnect easily on occasion) but a simple way to turn it on and off would have been welcome. I pop the batteries out when I'm not using it.So - that's it: in reality probably a solid 3-star device, but for me it's repaid itself many times over, I think it is the one piece of equipment I have which has outlasted all others - multiple OS changes, different computers, different games - but same controller. Reliability in my case means it is a 4-star rating, even counting the issues mentioned above.

I have large hands and osteoarthritis and the Logitec controllers have always been the most comfortable to use. The only thing I would change from a personal perspective is have the triggers further under the unit where your index fingers are more likely to sit.

This particular model controller functions very well and the batteries last a while. Can easily put 50 hours gaming in and the batteries are still going strong.

Great price too. Logitech has this on their site for around 40% more.

The joystick sometimes moves by itself while playing games, I can't stop it. I don't know if the joystick is stuck. then it gets better. 5 minutes later the joystick goes crazy again. I did not understand. They can control it if they want. But it destroyed all my enjoyment of the game. This is starting to piss me off. I just bought this joystick. I am incredibly unhappy. And I'm really waiting for a response.

These are comfortable and good when working well, but suffer from random interference, particularly when using two of them together on the same PC as I do. It's frustrating playing a game then losing all control or your character/car/tetris blocks (subject to game being played) just do their own thing.

I was disappointed. Being Logitech I expected a better and more consistent response. I would probably go for an alternate brand or a corded model next time.

My Logitech F710 has lasted me over two years. To this day, the thing works with some minor issues. It is truly a plug and play controller that has served me well.

FYI, I (like most of you I guess) am not a player with anger management issues. I don't throw my controller at the wall :D and I've been lucky not to spill drinks on my tech. Still, the F710 has seen some heavy use. My favorite game for it is GTA Online. I love to use a hybrid controller-kbm style of gameplay: the F710 is perfect for driving/flying situations. Trust me: hybrid gameplay is the best of both worlds and is real fun!

After two years of use, my F710 experiences the following issues:

* The 'A' key is not as clicky as it used it to be
* The left stick does not respond as well when pressed in.
* My computer struggles to recognize the controller. Have to unplug and plug the USB/remove the batteries.

Besides these issues, the controller still works as good as new! I'm thankful for the great gaming experiences it has given me! The F710 is the perfect blend of quality, affordability and durability.

I have no regrets with the F710 and would recommend you buy it as a starter controller. One thing to keep in mind is that the F710 has a different layout than standard Xbox controllers. Compare both before making a purchase. It shouldn't make too much of a difference but you should know that.
