Product description
One of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, Alice Coltrane's 4th Impulse! Album finds her on piano and harp in the company of saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. "Almost 50 years after [it] was released, the album remains a vision of universal healing, spiritual self-preservation in times of trouble and the god that appears when you seek her out." (NPR). Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Not an album that I was familiar with but the Acoustic Sounds series has generally been fantastic quality and this is no exception. High quality cover and pressing, the mastering is excellent with an all analogue chain, the recording is a little busy at times but that is baked into the mastertapes. Musically this is a delight, dreamy spiritual Jazz with an Eastern influence. Exceptional.

Sublime jazz masterpiece that brilliantly showcases the saxophone of Pharaoh Sander. A must own for any jazz fan.

Pressing is below par, some cracks and pops throughout even after cleaning. Arrived with fingerprint on the vinyl.

Jazz psychédélique
Reviewed in Canada on 22 October 2023Verified Purchase

Vinyl Review: - Acoustic Sounds Impulse Series 2023
Cover: - Glossy gatefold, “tip-on” cover, heavy card, well made, defined images & typography
Liner: - QRP archival inner sleeve
Vinyl: - flat, totally silent, no visible pressing defaults plays with no issues
5* there is a sense of richness, space & feeling on this reference quality recording. It would be easy to swamp the listener, this does not happen, it is subtle, detailed & delicate, A must have.
• Clarity: - Stunning from the first note
• Channel separation: - outstanding
• Channel balance: - stunning, detailed, airy lots of presence & space
• Sound Stage: - massive, open, spacious, yet dominated by the drones, spectacular room projection & transparency
• Distortion: - non audible
• Compression: - huge dynamic & frequency range
• Atmosphere: - sense of a huge space filled with swirling sound which grows, swells & shrinks
• Bass – low frequencies: - acoustic bass is rich & detailed whilst the drums are clear & detailed the drones add to the atmosphere & do not swamp the overall sound
• Treble – high frequencies: - horns have right amount of power & detail, the drones & harp are clear, delicate & float
• Vocals: - none
I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile.
As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.
Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.
