Product description
Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. Recorded for Berry Gordy's short-lived Workshop Jazz imprint and recorded at the Hitsville USA studio, Roy Brooks (joined by fellow Detroit natives George Bohannon and Hugh Lawson, along with his Horace Silver Quintet bandmates Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, and Eugene Taylor) injects a Motor City soul-jazz groove into the hard bop root of this engaging 1964 album. Verve By Request Series features transfers from analog tapes, remastered on 180-gram vinyl and pressed at Third Man in Detroit.

Good and rare hard bop album
Reviewed in Canada on 8 November 2023Verified Purchase
Good album, maybe not enough long instrumental solos as you'd have at a Jazz Messengers classic, but interesting performances and arrangements, nevertheless. Good quality vinyl pressed at Third Man Pressing, Detroit. Much better pressing than some LP's ( and I include here some doubtful pressings of Impulse and earlier Blue Note 75 Anniversary albums that I recently got and that are bluntly put, of poor quality...)

One swingin’ record!
Reviewed in the United States on 22 December 2022Verified Purchase
This was a very difficult record to find in (almost) any condition. If you like Horace Silver’s band around this time period, then you will LOVE this. Horace is replaced by Hugh Lawson and Roy added George Bohannan on ‘bone. This recording swings like a Silver date, as Brooks picked some challenging tunes. If you are a ‘55-‘65 Jazz fan, you’ll want this for the collection!

Hard bop must
Reviewed in France on 2 November 2023Verified Purchase
Rien à dire concernant ce pressage. Le son est optimal les instruments ressortent de façon claire et sonnent de façon uniforme. Du hard bop à son plus haut sommet avec un son très bien travaillé donc
Pourquoi s’en priver à un prix correct ?

A great album... a terrible pressing.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2023Verified Purchase
Third Man Pressing. A new name in plants and this is my first experience and im already thinking of a funky word that rhymes with third to describe their manufacturing. The problems start with the rounded plain paper and non-lined inner which is horribly reminscent of other terrible plants like Rainbo and URP. This leaves the LP covered in surface scuffing and paper residues. The two pictures show the two copies ive tried and you can further see serious stitching defects across the sides throughout the grooves. These are unacceptable and reek of quality control being a total inconvenience to be ignored entirely. The second one is dish warped just to add insult. Its a real shame becaise this great album was in dire need of a brilliantly mastered reissue which minus the defects this would have been.
YMMV as ever but i would expect a terrible pressing and wont try a third. Constantly returning records these days is a sad state but very glad Amazon have no qualms about such levels of defective manufacturing
Tried a second copy... just as hideous as the first. Im starting to resent this hobby now.
Third picture is of third copy... yep i waited a while and hoped a diff batch might help.... nope... non fills apently and a dish warp. Lovely mastering but AWFUL pressing

Nice Reissue of Hard to Find LP
Reviewed in Canada on 3 June 2023Verified Purchase
I was a little leery about ordering this after reading the review by Thomas Webb but when the price dropped by 29%, I decided to give it a try. No problems with my copy. Clean and flat. Sounds great too. Highly
recommended.
