Awesome peice of equipment and easy to set up, I have somehow now turned into an amateur weather man. The best bit about this is tracking how much rain I get while I work away, I have it hooked up to the soil moisture sensors which provide real time (minute updates) of how wet my grass is. I use this data to inform my watering schedule. As someone who spends a lot on water this is going to save me a heap of money.

The setup of this thing is not at all straight forward.

Firstly you need to understand the basic concept of this all the communications work.

The station itself is not WiFi enabled. It communicates like a cordless phone to the gateway and the gateway connects to the internet.

The gateway has no screen and no web interface, so you use an iPhone app to configure it.

The app is really clunky and it takes a lot of playing around to work out how it works.

When you add a device it works like this:

1. The app records your current WiFi SSID (which is often a 5g radio that doesn't work with the gateway).
2. It tells you to put the gateway into connect mode, but won't allow you to move on until the app determines you have switched from the app to something else (presumably your phone settings).
3. Once connected to the gateway if pre-enters the recorded SSID, which hopefully was a 2.4G WiFi radio.
4. You enter the WiFi password (you can also enter settings like WeatherUnderground on the same screen, which is cumbersome because these are often long complex strings).
5. The App reports that the connection worked, but then does nothing else.
6. As the Ecowitt cloud service uses the MACID of the device you need to logon to that portal and register the MACID (rather than using an ID/password pair like all the other services).
7. The app shows no weather data unless you have also setup WeatherUnderground (the app doesn't use the Ecowitt data for some crazy reason).
8. When you try and find your own device in the App it shows nothing at first because evidently it is doing a scan of your network which takes some time, but because there is no indication a search is happening you give up before the gateway is discovered. If for some insane reason you waited for 30 seconds it will appear.

If you email support they get back to you, but you don't get an email to confirm your request so that is also confusing. There is also no web portal for support.

Basically, this whole setup is what you'd expect from a product designed by a bunch of technical people who know what they are doing but have nothing but contempt for the average user.

It could all be fixed with a rewrite of the app, a Wiki and support using Zendesk.

Once you know how this all works you will be very happy with it. Perhaps most people who buy these things are technical people who have the patience to work it all out, but if that isn't you, don't expect this thing to be plug and play like your average Apple accessory.

I bought the gateway, two additional temp/humidity sensors (WN31 and WN32), a WH 40 rain gauge, and five WH51 soil moisture sensors. They all connected seamlessly, no problem. I'm also getting data from a neighbour's sensor array with a wind sensor.

The one criticism I have is that the setup instructions for the gateway are not as clear as they should be. Even as a software engineer, I was puzzled for a bit until I figured out how things are meant to work. The calibration instructions for the sensors also are rather obscure. The wind and soil sensors are not that simple to calibrate, due to the imprecise instructions. Better instructions would make this easy.

Despite the setup problems, I'm still very happy with the purchase. I had a question about the neighbour's sensor when it was picked up by my gateway. I sent off an email to customer support and received a reply within minutes (on a Sunday evening, no less). A follow-up question I had was also answered in less than an hour. Customer support is first rate!

I've had the system for only a few weeks, so I can't comment on longevity. But, so far, I'm absolutely happy with it. The sensors (after calibration) are very precise, and calibration was already quite good with the factory settings. Upload to Wunderground works flawlessly and is very simple to set up. (You need a WN32 sensor for that, the WN31 cannot upload to Wunderground, only to the Ecowitt server.)

If you want an affordable and fully-featured weather station, I can really recommend this system.

I would highly recommend buying from Ecowitt. The after-sales service was impeccable. I had a unit that started malfunctioning after a few months and they were so responsive with their replies and help. I was really impressed and thought I might have to return it through Amazon, but they sorted it all out for me.

Easy to set up by following the video from the qr code. Only difficult part was finding where the menu was to connect to weather underground. Its under other and then diy servers. Quite easy in the end. I have it set up with weather underground, weather cloud and also a PWS app that lets me see the station on my apple watch even.

I love it, it gives tons of info, fairly easy to set up, installation is a bit tricky as you require a short section of 2inch pipe with outside diameter of 2 inches. Then drill thru the pipe lower down for a couple of galvanized Lag bolts so that they can be secured into a barge board.

I am using this to replace an aging Vantage Pro station. Several things which I like better about the Ecowitt:
1. No console: uses a simple and inexpensive gateway module instead.
2. Data can be viewed from anywhere, using a cell phone app or a web browser.
3. Compatible with almost any operating system, including Linux and Raspberry Pi.
4. Gateway module connects all data to a 2.4 MHz WiFi network (required).
5. Except for the gateway, all sensors are powered by their own batteries, so they can be sited independently. (And the gateway does remember it's settings during power outages).
7. Once you have completed, the setup, you will have remote viewing from the Ecowitt server via cellphone or browser, and can easily set up Weather Underground as well.

The only disadvantages compared to the Vantage Pro are:
1. Does not come with a solar radiation shield for the exterior temperature/humidity sensor
2. Rain gauge collector is relatively shallow, so it won't accurately measure snow melt.

Setup was pretty straightforward, although the Quick Start Guide and the Manual are somewhat confusing in their description of the steps involved; be sure to keep both of them handy while setting up the gateway. Once that is accomplished, the rest of setup is pretty straightforward.

The temperature and humidity readings will vary slightly between different sensors, but even before calibration they were all within about +/- 2 F or +/-2% humidity. Calibration allows you to specify offsets for each temperature and humidity sensor. Once that is done the sensors track fairly well.

If a known accurate thermometer and hygrometer are available, then just tweak the sensor offsets until all the readings agree. If not, then set up all the sensors in one room where the temperature is fairly constant, and allow them to equalize for at least an hour. At that point, you can calculate the mean temperature and humidity reading, and the offset (difference) between each sensor and the mean (a small spreadsheet is handy for this). Enter these offset values to calibrate each sensor.

Note that the indoor sensor attached to the gateway module needs good ventilation since it generates a small amount of internal heat, which could throw off calibration unless it is properly ventilated. Place it and the other sensors at least a foot or two away from the gateway module or any other sources of heat, and elevate the indoor sensor a few inches to allow air to flow around it.

For the outdoor temperature/humidity sensor, I am using a LaCrosse 925-1418 Sensor Protection Shield (Ecowitt has a very similar one, but it was not currently available on Amazon). Note that this type of shield has to be mounted out of direct sunlight; I put it on the back of a porch post.

The live data and graphs produced from this kit are simply astonishing.
Contactable vía wifi at all times.
I love the facility to look at other people’s weather stations throughout the country.

Got a couple of sensors to monitor my garden temperature. It's not the easiest to connect to the WiFi but once set up is great to use. The app is full of information and the historical data is just what I was looking for. Just be aware the sensors are not designed to be exposed to the elements so either purchase an expensive enclosure or do what I did and make your own 'bird box' type for next to nothing.
