The Midwife of Auschwitz: Inspired by a heartbreaking true story, an emotional and gripping World War 2 historical novel Paperback – 24 May 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Inspired by an incredible true story, this poignant novel tells of one woman’s fight for love, life and hope during a time of unimaginable darkness.
Ana Kaminski is pushed through the iron gates of Auschwitz beside her frightened young friend Ester Pasternak. As they reach the front of the line, Ana steps forward and quietly declares herself a midwife – and Ester her assistant. Their arms are tattooed and they’re ordered to the maternity hut. Holding an innocent new-born baby, Ana knows the fate of so many are in her hands, and vows to do everything she can to save them.
When two guards in their chilling SS uniforms march in and snatch a blond-haired baby from its mother it’s almost too much for Ana to bear. Consoling the distraught woman, Ana realises amidst the terrible heartache there is a glimmer of hope. The guards are taking the healthiest babies and placing them with German families, so they will survive. And there are whispers the war is nearly over… Ana and Ester begin to secretly tattoo little ones with their mother’s numbers, praying one day they might be reunited.
Then, early one morning, Ana notices the small bump under Ester’s thin striped clothing…
An absolutely heart-breaking and page-turning WW2 novel of one woman’s bravery and determination to bring life and hope into a broken world. Fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Alice Network and The Nightingale will be gripped.

About the author
I wanted to be an author from the moment I could pick up a pen and was writing boarding-school novels by the age of nine. I made the early mistake of thinking I ought to get a ‘proper job’ and went into Factory Planning – a career that gave me some wonderful experiences, amazing friends and even a fantastic husband, but didn’t offer much creative scope. So when I stopped to have children I took the chance to start the ‘improper job’ of writing. It's not been easy but I love it and can't see myself ever stopping.
I write WW2 fiction, focusing in on some of the lesser known nooks and crannies of this astonishing period and writing from a female perspective. The Midwife of Auschwitz has been my bestselling novel to date but I am always looks to explore emotional tales of courage, strength and overcoming terrible odds.
I also write medieval fiction as Joanna Courtney.

This is a harrowing read, no doubt about it, and if you are of a gentle disposition, be warned, there are some graphic descriptions in this book! However, there were beautiful parts too.
Ana is a Catholic midwife, working in Lodz, Poland. She is happy in her marriage and has three strapping sons who are all forging their paths in the world. Ester is a Jewish nurse, who has a sweetheart called Filip. These two women are the main characters in this book, and considering the book starts at the beginning of WWII, you know that there is lots of drama ahead.
Yes, there are lots of graphic descriptions of what happens in a concentration camp. But one of the most amazing things that I had no idea about is that over 3000 babies were born in Auschwitz alone! I just didn't think about women giving birth under those circumstances and in those numbers, the mind just boggles. Goes to show how huge the numbers of people in Auschwitz were, actually, I can't even get my brain around it.
Anyhow, for me, it was more about the human spirit, the power of love and friendship, kindness, than anything else.
Ana and Ester are amazing women and I just LOVE that they are based on real people. The author did a lot of research into this book and I think that it pays homage to these champions of women and their babies.
5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
The story is told through two characters: Polish midwife Ana Kaminski and Jewish nurse Ester Pasternak. They are both sent to the same concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Their professions allow them to be spared. But they each experience some horrific things as they work together to try and save the children and keep hope alive. Of course, things don’t always go as planned but Ana’s and Ester’s efforts are admirable and their courage inspiring.
The Midwife of Auschwitz covers many things, including the after effects of war. Even those who survived by rescue or escape, once returning home, had a hard journey to normalcy. Adjusting to freedom again proved difficult, once they left the barbed wire fences and confining walls. Many scars remained, not only on their bodies but also on their minds.
This novel is beautifully written. It broke my heart over and over again. Yes, I did not want to stop reading and kept the tissues nearby. It made me feel every emotion possible. Author Anna Stuart has done an amazing job and, although the trail of sorrow runs far and wide, a major message in The Midwife of Auschwitz shines through: love will triumph over hate. I highly recommend this novel and give it 5 Stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
