Warlukurlangu Artists x Kenji Emu Dreaming All Over Print SS Rayon Shirt Blue

Own a piece of art from the Warlukurlangu Art Co-op, one of the Northern Territory's original art centres and contribute to its local community.

Kenji x Warlukurlangu Artists presents Sarah-Jane Nampijinpa Singleton - Yankirri Jukurrpa (Emu Dreaming) Ngarlikirlangu printed Resort Collar Short Sleeve Shirt, featuring the artists unique painting design on a lightweight Rayon fabric.

Sarah-Jane Nampijinpa Singleton was born in 1984 and grew up in Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community located 290 km north-west of Alice Springs in NT of Australia. Sarah-Jane is the daughter of two renowned Aboriginal artists and the granddaughter of Samson Japaljarri Martin who is one of the founding members of Warlukurlangu Artists. Sarah-Jane began painting from an early age and attended the Art Centre with her mother and her extended family where she watched and learned whilst listening to her familys stories. Working with Warlukurlangu Artists since 1999, Sarah-Jane is now married with three children and has a love for dot painting and working with colour, using an unrestricted palette to depict her traditional iconography whilst at the same time developing a modern individualist style.

This painting depicts a yankirri Jukurrpa (emu [Dromaius novaehollandiae] Dreaming) from a place called Ngarlikurlangu, approximately 50kms north of Yuendumu. This Jukurrpa tells the story of a yankirri (emu) and a wardilyka (bush turkey [Ardeotis australis]). The emu and bush turkey used to go around the country picking yakajirri (bush raisins [Solanum centrale]) and mashing them into kapurdu (fruit balls) to save in their nests for later. However, they were jealous of each other; so after the emu has destroyed the turkeys kapurdu they got into a big fight. The bush turkey eventually flew away to the north, leaving behind the smashed yakajirri balls. This practice of making kapurdu (fruit balls) is a traditional Warlpiri method of storing yakajirri.Today at Ngarlikirlangu we can see round, red rocks which are the kapurdu that the emu smashed up. There is also a dance for this yankirri (emu) Jukurrpa that is performed during mens initiation ceremonies.
